Uganda reports significant losses in operations against ADF rebels

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has revealed that since December 2021, over 560 members of the rebel group known as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which has links to the Islamic State, have been killed in military operations within Uganda.

The ADF, based in the jungles of the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, has been responsible for launching attacks in both Congo and Uganda.

With the consent of the Congolese government, Uganda’s military initiated operations against the ADF to dismantle their camps and neutralize their fighters.

President Museveni recently announced that they have successfully eliminated 567 ADF militants and apprehended 50 others.

They have confiscated 167 pieces of rebel equipment, including submachine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

Museveni stressed that the ADF now finds itself in a dire situation, with surrender as its only viable option.

He called upon various businesses in Uganda, such as bus operators, markets, and hotels, to exercise vigilance and register all customers to prevent potential ADF assailants from utilizing their facilities.

In recent developments, Ugandan police have uncovered six improvised explosive devices that the ADF had planned to employ, with one device being recovered from an individual just outside a church.

This underscores the ongoing threat posed by the ADF.

The ADF has been responsible for several devastating attacks in Uganda, including suicide bombings near a major police station and in close proximity to the parliament building in 2021, resulting in seven fatalities.

In June of this year, a tragic incident occurred in which 42 people, mostly students, were massacred at a school in Western Uganda.
