Borno fish traders and union leaders trade words N3bn revenue

In Maiduguri, Borno State, the youth division of the Baga Road Market Fish Sellers and Fish Farmers Association staged a protest within the market premises.

They urged the leaders of the main association, Borno State Fish Producers and Marketers Association, to provide a detailed account of approximately N3 billion in revenue amassed by the association over the past two years.

The young fish traders further alleged that the leadership of the main association, led by Alhaji Abacha Mandalama, has refrained from organizing elections for new leadership for an extended period spanning 24 years.

Bukar Abacha, the spokesperson for the youth group, asserted in a media interview following the protest that the union leaders only remitted N100 million of the N3 billion revenue to the state government.

He called for a thorough investigation into the remaining balance and criticized the lack of leadership elections over the past two decades, accusing the current leadership of favoritism and familial appointments.

In response, Alhaji Abacha Mandalama refuted the allegations made by the youth protesters.

He clarified that the revenue mentioned actually belongs to the government and not the association or himself.

Mandalama challenged the protesters’ figures, suggesting that their claims indirectly implicate the government, questioning the source of the data provided.

He also downplayed the significance of the extended leadership tenure, using an analogy with the prolonged rule of Paul Biya in Cameroon.
