9/11 survivor dies while attempting to save group of kids from drowning

Luke Laidley, a heroic father of three who survived the 9/11 terrorist attack, tragically lost his life on July 4 while selflessly attempting to save children from drowning in Lake Michigan.

The incident occurred near Elder Beach, where Laidley, aged 43, was operating a boat to celebrate the holiday.

When a raft carrying children capsized around 1:30 p.m., Laidley immediately leaped into the water to rescue the struggling children.

After about a minute underwater, he emerged with the children and helped bring them to safety. However, Laidley himself required CPR after being pulled back onboard.

Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to Evanston Hospital.

Laidley, described as a “true family man,” is survived by his wife, Lauren, and their three young children.

Having survived the 9/11 attack, where he safely evacuated from the South Tower of the World Trade Center on his second day at work, Laidley deeply appreciated the value of life and giving to others.

His family emphasized his positive spirit, love for others, and the impact he made as a hero.
