Customs seizes N1bn worth of petrol and smuggled goods in May

Nigeria Customs Service Intercepts N1bn Worth of Contraband, Including Petrol and Rice” The Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Ikeja of the Nigeria Customs Service announced that it successfully intercepted various contraband items in May 2023.

The seized goods, which had a duty paid value of N1 billion, included 30,900 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and 6,861 bags of foreign parboiled rice equivalent to 12 trailer loads.

The Customs unit disclosed that the interceptions took place at different times and locations within the border corridors of the South-West Zone.

Hussein Ejibunu, the Acting Customs Area Controller, explained that the contrabands were seized due to violations such as importation/exportation guideline breaches, concealment, undervaluation, wrong classification, and smuggling.

A total of 79 seizures were made, with various items confiscated, including cannabis sativa, unprocessed wood, vehicles, vegetable oil, and second-hand clothing.

Four suspects were also arrested in connection with some of the intercepted goods.

The Customs Service stressed the importance of public cooperation in sharing information to combat smuggling and its associated crimes.
