Nigerians struggle to access N40,000 rice sales points

AGS NEWS – Nigerians in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are facing difficulties in locating sales points for the N40,000 subsidised rice launched by the Federal Government on September 5, 2024.

The initiative, led by Agriculture Minister Senator Abubakar Kyari, aims to sell 30,000 metric tonnes of rice at a reduced price of N40,000 per 50kg bag to combat rising food costs.

Kyari emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring Nigerians have access to affordable food, acknowledging challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, climate change, and local economic issues.

The minister assured citizens that mechanisms were in place to ensure transparent distribution, urging cooperation with government agencies.

Despite these promises, FCT residents have expressed frustration over their inability to find collection points.

Some, like Kuje resident Mrs. Yunusa Eleojo, reported paying over N80,000 for rice from wholesalers, far exceeding the government’s subsidised price.

Others, including a Bwari resident known as “Mama Twins,” voiced concerns about the lack of distribution and the potential for middlemen to exploit the system.

Attempts to get a response from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture have been unsuccessful, leaving residents waiting for clarity on where and how to access the subsidised rice. Many hope the issue will be resolved soon.
