US end Nigeria’s dream run in Olympics basketball quarter-finals

AGS NEWS – On Wednesday, the United States moved closer to winning an unprecedented eighth consecutive women’s basketball Olympic gold by defeating Nigeria 88-74 in the quarter-finals.

A’Ja Wilson led the US with 20 points and 11 rebounds, supported by Jackie Young with 15 points and Breanna Stewart with 13 points.

The US will face Australia in the semi-finals on Friday, following Australia’s 85-67 victory over Serbia. France also advanced to the semi-finals, beating Germany 84-71. They will compete against Belgium, who defeated Spain 79-66.

The match saw NBA stars LeBron James and Bam Adebayo, along with swimming legends Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky, watching from the sidelines.

Despite a strong performance from Nigeria’s Promise Amukamara, who scored 19 points, the US maintained their lead with a decisive run in the second quarter and never looked back.

Australia, led by Alanna Smith’s 22 points and 13 rebounds, dominated their game against Serbia, while France impressed with a strong performance from Marine Johannes, who scored 24 points.

Belgium’s advancement to the semi-finals is a first, and they will face a tough challenge against the French team.
