Nigerian actress sentenced to six months for spraying new naira notes

On February 1, 2024, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, convicted and sentenced actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin to six months imprisonment for spraying and stepping on new naira notes at a social event in Lagos State.

Omoseyin was initially charged on February 13, 2023, by the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on two counts. She pleaded not guilty and was granted bail on February 15, 2023.

One of the charges stated that on January 28, 2023, at Monarch Event Centre, Lekki, Lagos, Omoseyin tampered with the sum of N100,000, issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, by spraying the money during a social occasion, violating Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.

At the resumed hearing, Omoseyin changed her plea to guilty, and the prosecution presented evidence, including her statement, forensic reports of her phone, video footage of the incident, and statements from the event center’s representative.

Justice Aneke admitted the evidence as exhibits and convicted the actress.

The defense pleaded for leniency, highlighting her being a first-time offender, a mother of one, and expressing remorse.

In delivering the sentence, Justice Aneke imposed a six-month imprisonment with an option of a N300,000 fine, effective from Thursday.
