President Bola Tinubu has announced a strategic focus on improving Nigeria’s health sector through substantial investments and increased budget allocation in the proposed 2024 budget.
Emphasizing health as a fundamental human right, Tinubu outlined plans for an extensive overhaul of physical infrastructure, equipment, and re-training of frontline health workers, commencing in 2024.
The announcement came during the unveiling of Nigeria’s Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative at the State House, Abuja, as part of the activities marking Universal Health Coverage Day.

The initiative aims to achieve Universal Health Care Coverage and address challenges, including the exodus of health workers from Nigeria over the past five years.
Tinubu highlighted the importance of collective efforts, non-partisan coordination, and urged developed countries benefiting from Nigerian medical professionals to invest in the sector.
The President pledged a substantial budget allocation for the health sector in 2024 and encouraged Nigerian health professionals abroad to contribute to their home country’s healthcare system.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, elaborated on policy actions, including the redesign of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) as a foundational basis for a sector-wide approach.

The BHCPF is expected to receive at least $2.5bn in financing from 2024 to 2026 to enhance the primary health system nationwide.
Prof. Pate also highlighted plans for transparent reporting, increased allocation in the proposed 2024 budget for health and social welfare sectors, and initiatives to address rising pharmaceutical prices.
