Polling stations in Liberia opened today at 8 AM GMT, with more than 2.4 million registered voters ready to cast their ballots in the general elections.
Incumbent President George Weah is facing competition from 19 candidates. To secure the presidency, a candidate must receive a minimum of 50 percent plus one of the total votes.
If no candidate reaches this threshold, the top two parties from the first round will proceed to a run-off election scheduled for November. In addition to the presidential race, voters will select members for both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Key election issues include addressing the cost-of-living crisis, advancing development, and establishing a war crimes court to hold accountable those responsible for Liberia’s civil conflicts.
Despite tensions between rival factions in the lead-up to the polls, Liberia’s major political parties have pledged to maintain peace throughout the election process.
Polling stations will close at 6 PM GMT, and initial election results are expected to be announced within 15 days.
