ECOWAS implements additional sanctions on Niger

In response to the coup in Niger Republic, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has introduced additional sanctions.

Previously, the regional organization had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Niger junta, demanding the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum, warning of potential sanctions, including the option of military intervention.

Undeterred by ECOWAS’ warnings, the coup leaders rejected foreign interference and took steps like severing ties with Nigeria, Togo, France, and the United States.

They also indefinitely closed Nigerien airspace.

Upon the expiry of the ultimatum, ECOWAS has slated a meeting for Thursday to evaluate the situation in the West African country.

Speaking to reporters at the State House on Tuesday, Presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale disclosed that additional sanctions had been imposed on individuals and entities associated with the military junta in Niger Republic.

While not delving into specifics, he mentioned that these measures were executed through the Central Bank of Nigeria.
