The people of Mpu community in Nigeria have held a prayer vigil for their former Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, and a UK-based Nigerian doctor, who are awaiting sentence from a UK court.
The community gathered at the Community Primary School, Amagu Mpu playground, to pray for divine intervention and to appeal to the UK government to temper justice with mercy.
The people of Mpu believe that Ekweremadu is a philanthropist who has transformed the Aninri Local Government Area and given a new lease of life to thousands of people.
The community has held several such prayer vigils in the past, and despite the court pronouncing the accused guilty, their faith remains strong that God will intervene in their behalf.
The pastor in charge of Ancient Path Revival Assembly Mpu, Nathaniel Nwankwo, led the prayer, saying that no human being is above mistake, and appealing to God to show mercy to the accused as he did to the woman that committed adultery in the Bible.
The traditional ruler of Amokofia Mpu, Igwe Cyprian Ije, also appealed to the Nigerian government and well-meaning individuals to lend their voices to ensure the release of Ekweremadu.
The people of Mpu believe that Ekweremadu’s good works speak volumes about him in a positive manner, and that he has been a backbone to their community.
They lamented that the absence of the lawmaker has already started affecting them, with many indigent students under his scholarship scheme discontinuing their studies due to lack of funds. The people of Mpu are not ready to leave the prayer vigil until God hears their cry and the accused are released.
