Federal Government Closes Case in Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial

The Federal Government on Thursday formally closed its case in the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is facing charges of terrorism and treason.

The lead prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, announced the closure of the case after the fifth prosecution witness, identified only as “EEE” for security reasons, concluded testimony before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The witness was cross-examined by Kanu’s defence lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN.

Awomolo told the court that the government had presented sufficient evidence through five witnesses, including media broadcasts attributed to Kanu, to support its charges.

“Having called five witnesses and presented sufficient material evidence, we are satisfied with the case we have made. I therefore close the case,” he said.

Following the prosecution’s announcement, lead defence counsel Kanu Agabi, SAN, informed the court of the defence’s intention to file a no-case submission, arguing that the evidence so far does not warrant the continuation of the trial.

The court is expected to hear the defence’s application on a date to be announced.
