18 families of fallen police officers in Adamawa get N14.9m welfare cheques

Eighteen families of deceased police officers in Adamawa State have received financial assistance amounting to ₦14,911,511, courtesy of the Nigeria Police Force.

The cheques, issued under the Group Life Assurance and Inspector-General of Police Family Welfare Scheme, were presented by the Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, at a formal ceremony held Monday at the State Police Command Headquarters in Yola.

Speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, CP Morris expressed deep appreciation for the service and sacrifice of the fallen officers.

“These men and women gave their lives in the line of duty. We may not bring them back, but we can bring some relief to the loved ones they left behind,” Morris said.

He reaffirmed the IGP’s commitment to the welfare of all officers—serving, retired, or deceased—describing it as a cornerstone of ongoing police reforms.

The disbursed funds are intended to support the families in coping with the loss of their breadwinners. Each cheque was issued in varying amounts, determined by the rank and service record of the deceased officers.

One of the recipients, Mrs. Christiana Garba, widow of the late Inspector Garba who was killed in a gun battle with kidnappers in 2024, said:

“I thought the police had forgotten about us. But this cheque tells me they remember.”

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Adamawa State Command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, emphasized that the initiative reflects a renewed focus on police welfare under the leadership of IGP Egbetokun.

“This is not a favour. It’s a right. And we’re happy that under IGP Egbetokun, the system is working,” Nguroje told reporters.

The presentation ceremony was attended by senior police officers, family members of the beneficiaries, and representatives of welfare bodies.
