AGS NEWS – Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is personally leading an ambitious effort to build “superintelligence”—a form of artificial intelligence that could surpass human capabilities—according to a report by Bloomberg.

Frustrated by what he sees as slow progress in Meta’s AI development, particularly with its Llama 4 large language model, Zuckerberg has taken matters into his own hands. He has reportedly begun meeting AI experts at his homes in Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto, California, in a bid to fast-track the project.

Sources cited by Bloomberg say Zuckerberg plans to hire around 50 specialists and has already reorganized Meta’s Menlo Park headquarters, relocating this elite AI team close to his own office.

Meta has already integrated AI features into Facebook, WhatsApp, and its Ray-Ban smart glasses, but it remains behind industry leaders like OpenAI. Zuckerberg’s intensified push comes amid fierce competition from tech giants like Microsoft-backed OpenAI, Google’s DeepMind, Anthropic, xAI (founded by Elon Musk), and a recently emerging Apple.

Zuckerberg’s new initiative is reportedly backed by Meta’s advertising revenues and may include major investments in Scale AI, a startup led by Alexandr Wang, who is said to be collaborating on the project.

While Meta has been promoting its Llama AI models as open-source alternatives to proprietary tools like ChatGPT, progress has lagged. Zuckerberg is said to be determined to reposition Meta as a global AI leader, aiming not just for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), but for the even more advanced concept of superintelligence.

“Before AI can surpass human brains, it needs to first match what humans can do,” experts note. But the timeline to achieving AGI remains uncertain—some researchers believe it’s years away, while others argue it may take decades or longer.

Still, the AI arms race is intensifying, with Meta and others recognizing that whoever leads in AI could control the future of everything from search engines to apps and smart devices. While OpenAI currently holds the lead with ChatGPT, competitors like Meta are making bold bets to catch up—or leap ahead.
