University of Port Harcourt final year student sentenced to 14 years in prison over $22 Internet fraud

AGS NEWS – A final-year University of Port Harcourt student, Henry Nathaniel Ekanem, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for internet fraud on Wednesday, October 30. Justice A. T.

Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt issued the sentence following Ekanem’s arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate, on seven charges of obtaining money under false pretenses and impersonation.

One of the charges revealed Ekanem defrauded $22 from Diana Roskov by pretending to be Coran Capsha, manager of singer Chris Stapleton, in September 2024.

Ekanem pleaded guilty, leading prosecution counsel A. Abubakar to present evidence and request sentencing.

The defendant’s lawyer, F. T. Fred-Boufini, pleaded for leniency, noting Ekanem’s status as a first-time offender.

However, Justice Mohammed sentenced Ekanem to two years for each count, with the option of a N200,000 fine per count, and ordered the forfeiture of his phones to the government as proceeds of crime
