AGS NEWS – The Federal Government has directed electricity distribution companies to replace weak distribution networks in their areas within seven days.
This order was issued by the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) after a two-month notice was previously given to the Discos for necessary upgrades.
Tukur Aliyu, NEMSA’s Managing Director and Chief Electrical Inspector, announced this at the 2024 Customer Service Week in Abuja, explaining that many distribution networks were found to be old and weak.
He said Discos must upgrade these networks to ensure safe electricity distribution.
Following an electrocution incident in Calabar, NEMSA ordered Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company to upgrade parts of its network.

However, after two inspections, Aliyu reported that the work was unsatisfactory, leading NEMSA to issue enforcement notices to Discos nationwide.
The two-month deadline for upgrades is approaching, and NEMSA officers are set to monitor compliance.
Aliyu advised consumers to hire certified electricians for installations to ensure safety and accountability.
Speaking at the event, SERVICOM National Coordinator Nnenna Akajemeli emphasized the importance of exceeding customer expectations, as reflected in the 2024 Customer Service Week theme, “Above and Beyond.”
