AGS NEWS – Tens of thousands of international students protested across Canada this week against new federal immigration policies.
According to City News Toronto, about 70,000 students participated in demonstrations in major provinces, including Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia.
The protests were sparked by recent immigration reforms, leading to fears of deportation among international students.
In 2021, Canada ended the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program, which previously allowed students to gain work experience after completing their studies.
The government introduced a two-year cap on international student visas, reducing foreign student intake by 35%.

As of 2023, international students accounted for 37% of study visa holders in Canada. The government argues that the visa cap is necessary to ease pressure on housing, unemployment, and public services.
In June, the government further restricted regulations, announcing that foreign nationals could no longer apply for a PGWP at the border, raising concerns among students about their future in Canada.
Advocacy groups like the Naujawan Support Network warn that many graduates could face deportation once their work permits expire.
The situation has been worsened by provincial policies, including a 25% reduction in permanent residency nominations, limiting opportunities for international students to stay in Canada.
Immigrant workers have also held rallies in cities like Brampton, opposing claims that they are contributing to housing and job crises.
