Floods destroy 32,837 houses, displace 227,494 persons – NEMA

AGS NEWS – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that floods have affected 27 states, impacting 227,494 people and damaging 32,837 houses. Additionally, 16,488 hectares of farmland have been destroyed.

NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, made this announcement in a statement from the agency’s spokesperson, Ezekiel Manzo.

Umar emphasized the importance of public awareness and grassroots education on waste management to prevent blocked drainages and waterways.

She urged State Emergency Management Agencies and community leaders to prepare for rapid flood response and advised those living in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds ahead of the rainy season’s peak.

NEMA is coordinating with state agencies to assess flood damage and provide necessary relief. The agency has also mobilized search and rescue teams and is actively distributing relief items to affected areas.

Umar reassured farmers not to panic over the temporary dry spell, noting that it would soon end as predicted by NiMet. NEMA remains committed to efficient disaster management across the country.
