TUC backs Tinubu’s N5m monthly pay for judges

AGS NEWS – President Bola Tinubu signed the Judicial Office Holders Salaries and Allowances Bill into law on Tuesday, effectively increasing the salaries of judicial officials by 300 percent.

As a result, the Chief Justice of Nigeria will now receive an annual salary of N64 million, which equates to N5.3 million monthly.

Other top judicial figures, including the President of the Court of Appeal and Justices of the Supreme Court, will also see significant pay increases.

The Trade Union Congress and various civil society organizations welcomed the salary hike, acknowledging it as a long-overdue step.

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, described the move as historic, noting that it addresses the longstanding demand for better conditions for judicial officers.

Despite the positive reception, some criticized the bill for being discriminatory, pointing out that other public and civil servants also face high living costs but have not received similar pay increases.

The bill, which was passed by the National Assembly in June, reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to reforming the judiciary and improving the welfare of its officers.

The new law also updates the existing framework for the remuneration of judicial officeholders in Nigeria, ensuring that their pay aligns with current economic realities.
