Three million Nigerians face flood threats – IOM

AGS NEWS – The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has warned that at least 3.2 million Nigerians are at risk of displacement as the 2024 rainy season intensifies.

This concern is highlighted in the IOM’s Nigeria Response Overview Disaster Preparedness Plan, which addresses the increasing threat of climate-induced disasters in the country.

To support the most vulnerable populations, an estimated $12.95 million will be needed for shelter and resettlement initiatives throughout 2024.

These funds will be allocated to immediate rescue operations and longer-term rehabilitation efforts.

Nigeria experienced its worst flooding in decades in 2022, affecting 3.2 million people, including 1.9 million children.

The floods displaced over 1.4 million people, killed more than 600, and damaged thousands of homes and hectares of farmland.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency has identified 148 Local Government Areas in 31 states as high-risk flood zones for 2024.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has called for proactive measures, such as community sensitisation, clearing waterways, and relocating vulnerable communities to mitigate the impact of potential floods.
