Nigerians who won medals for other nations at Paris 2024 Olympics

AGS NEWS – At the Paris 2024 Olympics, several athletes of Nigerian descent made notable contributions while representing countries like Germany, Bahrain, the United States, France, Great Britain, and Spain.

These athletes, though connected to Nigeria, chose to compete for other nations, earning medals and showcasing the global reach of Nigerian talent.

Highlights include gold in shot put for Germany’s Yemisi Ogunleye, silver in the 400m for Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser, and gold in men’s football for Spain’s Samu Omorodion.

Despite these achievements, Nigeria itself left the Olympics without a single medal, marking one of its most disappointing performances since the 2012 London Games.

The Olympics concluded with the United States leading the medal table with 126 medals, followed by China and Japan. France, the host nation, finished fifth.

Nigeria’s government had allocated over N12bn for Olympic and Paralympic preparations, but the country’s athletes struggled to reach the podium.

As the focus shifts to the Paralympic Games, where Nigeria has traditionally excelled, there is hope for better results.

Looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, experts call for improved sports infrastructure and athlete support to help Nigeria regain its standing in global sports.
