Network awards $5m for AI health solutions

AGS NEWS – The Grand Challenges Network (GCN) has awarded $5 million to 50 recipients to develop health solutions using artificial intelligence (AI).

This funding initiative aims to promote equitable and responsible AI use, particularly as emerging technologies like machine learning and quantum computing rapidly advance.

The GCN’s AI funding call builds on the success of previous AI innovation projects supported by the Gates Foundation’s Grand Challenges program.

The effort is a collaboration among partners from Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Americas, including Grand Challenges Africa, Brazil, Canada, Ethiopia, India, Senegal, and South Africa.

These partnerships are supported by various government agencies and research institutions, such as the Science for Africa Foundation, Brazil’s Ministry of Health, and the South African Medical Research Council.

The funded projects span areas such as clinical decision support, health systems strengthening, health communications, patient care, support for frontline workers, public health policy, clinical trials, diagnostics, and population health.

These innovations are designed to improve healthcare accessibility, empower individuals in managing their health, and address specific challenges in low- and middle-income countries.

Professor Ntobeko Ntusi, President and CEO of the South African Medical Research Council, emphasized the importance of supporting local innovators who understand their communities’ unique needs.

Carlos Gadelha, Brazil’s Secretary of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Health Complex, highlighted the initiative’s value in fostering global cooperation and locally driven innovation.

Trevor Mundel, President of the Gates Foundation’s Global Health Division, echoed these sentiments, stressing that local insights are vital for AI to significantly impact healthcare systems.
