WhatsApp may exit Nigeria over $220m fine

AGS NEWS – One week after Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) imposed a $220 million fine on WhatsApp for a data privacy breach, the Meta-owned company might suspend its operations in the country due to additional regulatory demands.

Sources suggest that Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, is considering withdrawing some services from Nigeria.

In addition to the fine, the FCCPC has ordered WhatsApp to stop sharing user data with other Facebook companies and third parties without explicit user consent.

The commission also mandates that WhatsApp disclose its data collection practices and improve user control over data usage.

Meta expressed concerns, stating that it may be impossible to continue providing WhatsApp in Nigeria under these new regulations.
