Steer clear of prisons, NCoS warns protesters

AGS NEWS – The Federal Government has designated all its 256 custodial centers nationwide as “red zones” in anticipation of the planned anti-government protests on August 1.

The Controller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, announced this in a statement on Tuesday through the NCoS Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar.

Nababa warned that anyone without official business should avoid these facilities.

“In light of the national protest set for August 1, custodial centers are now red zones,” he stated. “These centers are crucial for public safety and national security.

Any attack on them could lead to chaos and further jeopardize society’s security.”

Nababa called for public cooperation in protecting correctional facilities and reported that security measures have been reinforced, including the activation of the Ministry of Interior Joint Task Force to provide additional security.

He expressed gratitude for public support in maintaining peace around correctional centers and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to the NCoS.

The announcement follows the 2020 #EndSARS protests, during which several custodial facilities were breached, leading to over 2,000 inmates escaping.

In Edo State, nearly 2,000 inmates escaped from the Oko and Benin centers, while 58 inmates escaped from the Okitipupa center in Ondo State.
