Cross River assembly calls for crackdown on illegal miners

AGS NEWS – The Cross River State House of Assembly has urged the State Government to halt illegal mining activities by migrants in Okwa 1, Okwa 2, and Ukwango in Boki Local Government Area.

This resolution was made on Thursday in Calabar following an urgent public matter raised by Bette Obi, the representative of Boki 1 State Constituency.

Obi, who chairs the House Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, highlighted a significant influx of over 1,000 unidentified Fulanis into Boki communities in search of solid minerals.

He revealed that these migrants are engaging in illegal gold mining within a Government Reserved Area, depriving the state of its natural resources and revenue.

Obi expressed concern for his constituents, noting that the Fulanis now outnumber the locals, creating fear for their lives and property.

Other lawmakers echoed his concerns, calling the illegal mining situation “unfortunate” and noting its association with criminal activities.

The Assembly called for security agencies to intervene, arrest, and prosecute the illegal miners.

They also suggested involving advocacy groups to educate community leaders about the dangers of illegal mining.
