Bill proposing six-year single term for president and governors passes first reading

AGS NEWS – A bill aimed at amending the 1999 constitution to establish a single six-year term for the President, State Governors, and Local Government Areas Chairmen passed its first reading on Wednesday, July 17.

Sponsored by Ikenga Ugochinyere, representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency, Imo State, along with 50 other lawmakers, the bill seeks to reduce the expenses associated with periodic four-year elections.

The bill proposes changes to Sections 7, 135, 137, 180, and 182 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

One key amendment is to Section 7, which would add a new subsection (5) stating that Local Government Chairmen will serve a six-year term starting from their election date.

It also details conditions under which this term can be extended, such as in times of war.

Further amendments include changes to Section 137, Section 180, and Section 182 to align with the proposed six-year term for the President and Governors.

The bill also allows for term extensions under specific circumstances, such as national emergencies.
