UK economy sees unexpected growth in May – Report

AGS NEWS – Britain’s economic output grew more than expected in May, official data revealed Thursday, providing an early boost to the newly-elected Labour government.

The Office for National Statistics reported that GDP growth was 0.4 percent in May, compared to flat GDP in April.

Analysts had predicted a growth of 0.2 percent for May.

“Delivering economic growth is our national mission, and we don’t have a minute to waste,” said Britain’s new finance minister Rachel Reeves in response to the data.

“A decade of national renewal has begun, and we are just getting started,” added Reeves, who is the country’s first female chancellor of the exchequer, appointed by new Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Starmer’s centre-left Labour party secured a decisive victory in last week’s general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.
