MTN Foundation and MUSON celebrate graduation of 29 young musicians

AGS NEWS – The MTN Foundation and the Musical Society of Nigeria recently celebrated the graduation of 29 young musicians from their esteemed scholarship program at the MUSON Centre in Lagos.

This event highlighted the scholars’ remarkable talents and marked an important milestone in their musical careers.

Established in 2006, the MTN Music Scholarship Programme offers top-quality classical music education to talented young Nigerians.

The event underscored the program’s success in nurturing exceptional talent and its positive impact on Nigeria’s music industry.

One of the standout graduates, Lala Gabriel, began his classical music journey at MUSON. He joined the program with two grade 5 certificates and is now leaving with 10 professional certificates.

Gabriel has developed into a versatile musician, proficient in playing the double bass and electric bass, producing music, mixing and mastering, directing choirs, and working as a movie sound designer.

“MUSON has been very impactful,” Gabriel said. “It has helped me grow and fine-tuned me into becoming a well-rounded musician.”

The graduating scholars performed a variety of classical and afrobeat pieces, showcasing their dedication and the high level of training they received.

Another notable graduate, Maria Nnaji, credited MUSON with refining her musical abilities.

Her skills have significantly improved under the guidance of her vocal coach, Princess Adebanke, who is also the Director of the School of Music at MUSON.

“Princess Adebanke helps amplify my strengths and improve my weaknesses; she pushes me to realize my potential,” Nnaji shared. “The MUSON effect has truly transformed my music.”

Odunayo Sanya, the Executive Director of the MTN Foundation, expressed pride and encouragement during her address.

She emphasized MTN’s commitment to youth development in Nigeria despite the country’s challenges, referring to MUSON as a “diamond in the rough” that polishes and produces exceptional musical talents annually.

She urged the graduates to be impactful and agents of change in their society. “Even if you don’t pay it forward in MUSON, please continue to pay it forward, remembering that some people took a chance on you. And that’s why you are here today.”

The MTN Foundation and MUSON are dedicated to expanding the scholarship program to reach more talented youths from underprivileged backgrounds, ensuring they have the opportunity to pursue their dreams.

The MTN MUSON partnership continues to make a lasting impact on Nigeria’s cultural landscape by investing in the next generation of musicians.
