UK’s richest family on trial for human trafficking

AGS NEWS – Four members of the Hinduja family, the UK’s wealthiest, are facing charges in Switzerland over their treatment of domestic staff.

The allegations involve exploitation and human trafficking, with claims that servants from India were paid low wages, worked long hours, and had their passports confiscated.

The trial has highlighted a stark contrast between the family’s alleged spending on their dog and the wages of their servants.

The Hindujas, who own a villa in Geneva’s affluent Cologny neighborhood, are accused of importing servants from India to care for their household and children.

Prakash and Kamal Hinduja, along with their son Ajay and his wife Namrata, allegedly paid their staff as little as $8 for 18-hour days and restricted their freedom.

Despite reaching a financial settlement over exploitation last week, the Hindujas still face serious trafficking charges in Switzerland, which they deny.

During the trial, prosecutor Yves Bertossa noted the nearly $10,000 the family allegedly spent annually on their dog, compared to the low daily wages paid to their servants.

While the Hinduja family’s lawyers did not deny the low wages, they argued that the staff also received accommodation and food.

The long working hours were disputed, with one lawyer claiming that watching films with the Hinduja children should not be considered work.

Some former servants testified in favor of the Hindujas, describing them as a friendly family who treated their staff with respect.

However, the serious allegations of passport confiscation and restricted freedom could be considered human trafficking.

Prosecutor Bertossa is seeking prison terms, millions of dollars in compensation, and coverage of legal fees.
