Nigerian troops deployed to Gambia for peacekeeping mission

AGS NEWS – The Nigerian Armed Forces have deployed 197 personnel to The Gambia for a peacekeeping mission, despite domestic security challenges like banditry and terrorism.

This deployment was announced by Maj-Gen. Boniface Sinjen during the graduation of Nigerian troops for the Economic Community of West African States Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) at Jaji, Kaduna State.

The personnel underwent Pre-Deployment Training at Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre in Jaji.

Sinjen emphasized their training’s importance in equipping them with tactical skills for peace support operations, stressing values like teamwork, leadership, and cultural sensitivity.

He highlighted the mission’s critical timing amid The Gambia’s political uncertainties, underscoring the troops’ role in maintaining peace, protecting civilians, and supporting regional stability.

Sinjen urged professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights, aligning with ECOWAS mandates.

Commandant Maj-Gen. Ademola Adedoja emphasized the rigorous six-week training’s role in preparing troops for their Gambia deployment.

It covered key issues such as Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, Conflict Related Sexual Violence, and Protection of Civilians, ensuring their readiness for multidimensional peace operations.

This deployment underscores Nigeria’s commitment to global peace and security through the United Nations-accredited training at MLAILPKC, demonstrating its capability to produce skilled peacekeepers for complex environments.
