Remi Tinubu clarifies nudity statement, not aimed at Meghan Markle

AGS NEWS – Remi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, has sought to clarify her recent comments, which were misconstrued as criticism of Meghan Markle’s attire during her visit to the country.

Following Meghan’s visit, Tinubu, speaking at an event commemorating the first year of her husband, Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidency, advised Nigerian youths to refrain from indecency and nudity.

She emphasized, “We are not having the Met Gala… We don’t accept nakedness in our culture. It is not beautiful at all.

They are mimicking and trying to emulate film stars from America. They don’t know where they come from. Why did Meghan come here, looking for Africa? That is something we have to take home with. We know who we are, and don’t lose who you are.”

International media outlets interpreted Tinubu’s remarks as directed at Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex.

Responding to the controversy, the First Lady’s office clarified that her reference to the Duchess of Sussex pertained to Meghan’s journey to discover her identity and heritage, particularly after learning about her Nigerian ancestry.

“She meant Meghan appreciates the people we are and hence her coming here,” the First Lady’s office stated in a statement to AFP Fact Check.

“At no point did she say anything about Meghan’s dressing.”
