Senator Kawu endorses Tinubu’s Legal action on local government autonomy against governors

AGS NEWS – Senator Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District, has praised President Bola Tinubu for taking legal action against state governors regarding the autonomy of local government councils.

Sumaila, a member of the New Nigeria Political Party (NNPP), believes that Tinubu’s decision to bring the issue to court is the right move.

The senator emphasized that the resistance of governors to local council autonomy undermines the effectiveness of the 774 local government areas, which are an essential part of government structure.

President Tinubu, through the Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, filed multiple cases against all 36 state governors at the Supreme Court, alleging violations of relevant provisions of the 1999 constitution regarding local government governance and functionality.

In response to these legal actions, Senator Kawu released a statement expressing his support.

He believes that granting autonomy to local governments, as mandated by the constitution, is crucial for improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians, especially those in rural areas.

Sumaila highlighted the potential benefits of local government autonomy, including increased development and economic growth at the grassroots level.

He hopes that this move will lead to improved governance and better services for local communities.

However, the senator also urged President Tinubu to address the issue of local government elections.

He pointed out that the current electoral process is often manipulated by politicians for personal gain, undermining the interests of the majority.
