Lagos to demolish Oshodi market extensions starting July 30

AGS NEWS – The Lagos State Government has announced plans to begin the demolition of Oshodi Market by July 30.

This was revealed by Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), on Monday.

Oki stated that LASBCA, in collaboration with the Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Council, is educating property owners, residents, shop owners, and market traders about the upcoming removal of illegal structures.

These include extensions built on road setbacks, shops, buildings, and public school premises in the Oshodi-Isolo area.

The deadline for demolition compensation is set for July 30. Oki emphasized the importance of removing attachments that obstruct roads, explaining that many buildings have unauthorized extensions causing these issues.

“Change is necessary but challenging,” Oki remarked. “To achieve it, we must remove these illegal extensions. Selling on the road is not acceptable, and everyone must comply with the regulations.”

Oki also encouraged traders without approved building plans to take advantage of the 90-day amnesty period provided by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The Executive Chairman of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, Kehinde Oloyede, highlighted the importance of road access for market efficiency.

He noted that the state government believes better road access will aid market activities, especially for emergency services like the fire department.

Oloyede mentioned that the local government is working with LASBCA to ensure most extensions and attachments are removed by the end of the festive period in July. After this period, the Lagos State Government will enforce the demolition if necessary.
