FCT taxi operators hold meeting on CNG vehicle adoption

AGS NEWS – The Association of Taxi Unions in the Federal Capital Territory will meet today to discuss integrating Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles into their transport system.

This was disclosed by Shehu Shugaba, President of Painted Abuja Taxis, in a phone conversation on Friday Shugaba mentioned that although the government has not officially communicated this plan to the unions, awareness is increasing.

“We want to have a meeting with all the unions tomorrow and meet with the government.

We do not know whether they are going to give it to us or we are going to purchase it. But we will hold a meeting tomorrow and get back to you on the matter,” Shugaba said.

Musa Mohammed, National President of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, expressed his commitment to the CNG initiative, having already acquired 2,500 dual-fuel vehicles that run on both fossil fuel and gas.

He stated, “I have launched my own CNG vehicles. I am the first person who launched 2,500 CNG vehicles. And I have been using my CNG vehicles since then. My vehicles are dual vehicles. They can either use fuel or gas.”

Segun Falade, spokesperson for the National Union of Road Transport Workers, confirmed the union’s active involvement in the CNG plan.

He noted that the government initially proposed 2,700 buses and tricycles nationwide, but the union advocated for 10,000.

The government agreed to start with 3,000 buses and tricycles, set to be commissioned on May 29.

Discussions are ongoing regarding funding and a possible private-public partnership to expand the fleet further.
