Actor Femi Adebayo raises concern over film piracy

AGS NEWS – Nollywood actor Femi Adebayo has voiced his concerns about the increasing cases of film piracy in the country.

Taking to his Instagram page, @femiadebayosalami, on Tuesday, Adebayo shared his recent experience and successful battle against piracy involving one of his movies.

He emphasized that the true benefits of the film industry have not been fully realized due to the illegal activities of movie pirates.

Adebayo highlighted the challenges faced by investors in committing funds to filmmakers because of piracy.

However, he expressed confidence that through persistence and the legal framework governing intellectual property, the activities of pirates can be gradually curtailed.

Recalling his personal encounters with movie pirates, Adebayo recounted a recent legal dispute with a prominent media company involved in radio broadcasting and YouTube content distribution.

During the cinema release of his movie “Survival of Jelili” in 2019, the company used his movie poster and title to promote another film on their platform, resulting in revenue diversion.

Despite the three-year legal battle, Adebayo remained steadfast in his belief in the legal system.

With the support of his legal team, Bola Adebowale & Co Legal Practitioners, he presented compelling evidence and arguments in court, ultimately winning the case and being awarded twenty-five million Naira.

Adebayo emphasized that his victory is not just a personal triumph but a win for the entire Nollywood industry.

He called on filmmakers to remain vigilant against intellectual property theft and piracy, stressing that each successful case brings them closer to protecting their works and obtaining their true economic value.
