EFCC presents new evidence against Emefiele in court

EFCC presents new evidence against Emefiele in court

AGS NEWS – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has presented additional evidence against former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele.

At the court session on Friday, Emefiele’s lawyer, Olalekan Ojo, requested a postponement to review the new evidence before continuing the cross-examination of the second prosecution witness, John Ikechukwu Ayoh.

Ojo accused the EFCC counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, of not being diligent in their prosecution and engaging in what he termed “trial by ambush.”

He stated that he had just received the new evidence from the EFCC and needed time to study it.

Similarly, counsel to the second defendant, Adeyinka Kotoye, expressed frustration, stating that he was served the additional evidence only five minutes after arriving in court.

However, Oyedepo defended the EFCC’s actions, stating that the documents were provided in preparation for the testimony of a former aide to Emefiele, John Adetona.

Oyedepo clarified that Adetona was not scheduled to appear in court on the present or upcoming hearing and argued that the introduction of new documents did not hinder the ongoing cross-examination.

Despite Oyedepo’s argument, Emefiele’s lawyer insisted on more time to review the documents, citing their potential significance for cross-examination.

In response, the presiding judge, Rahman Oshodi, sided with the defendant’s counsel and adjourned the matter to May 9.

Emefiele and his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, are facing trial on a 26-count charge in a Lagos high court. Both have pleaded not guilty to all charges.
