Google agrees to delete billions of browser records in ‘Incognito’ lawsuit settlement

AGS NEWS – Google has agreed to delete billions of data records as part of a settlement for a lawsuit accusing the tech giant of improperly tracking users’ web-browsing habits.

The lawsuit, filed in 2020, alleged that Google misrepresented the data it collects from users browsing in “Incognito” mode.

The terms of the settlement were disclosed in a court filing on Monday.

Google will delete the private browsing activities of users and update its disclosure on data collection during private browsing sessions.

For the next five years, users in private browsing mode will be able to block third-party cookies.

David Boies, the attorney representing the consumer plaintiffs, described the settlement as “a historic step in requiring honesty and accountability from dominant technology companies.”

However, users will not receive damages as part of the settlement, but they retain the option to sue individually.
