Rep warns border reopening could cripple Nigeria’s economy

AGS NEWS – Olusola Fatoba, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics, and Values, has urged support for the manufacturing sector to reduce imports and bolster Nigeria’s economy.

He emphasized the importance of producing what Nigerians consume rather than relying on foreign goods.

Fatoba, representing Ado/Irepodun-Ifelodun Local Government Areas of Ekiti State, expressed these views during a discussion with journalists in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

Fatoba opposed calls for the reopening of borders, stating that it would not solve the nation’s economic challenges but would instead worsen them.

He advocated for self-sufficiency in production and suggested seeking expertise from other countries to enhance local production capabilities.

He called on federal and state governments to implement programs that would uplift citizens and boost local production.

Regarding the rising prices of food despite the strengthening of the Naira against the Dollar, Fatoba stressed the need for government intervention to regulate prices.

He emphasized the importance of stabilizing prices to ensure affordability for consumers.

Fatoba also highlighted the significance of encouraging the manufacturing sector and investing in agriculture to alleviate the burden on Nigerians.
