Ethan Crumbley’s parents receive 10-15 years jail sentence for school shooting

AGS NEWS – James and Jennifer Crumbley, the parents of Ethan Crumbley, who carried out a fatal shooting at Oxford High School in 2021, have been sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison.

This follows their conviction for involuntary manslaughter earlier this year, making them the first parents of a US school shooter to be convicted.

During the sentencing hearing on Tuesday, both parents expressed remorse for their son’s actions, while their lawyers sought leniency in their punishment.

However, prosecutors argued for a longer sentence, emphasizing the parents’ failure to intervene despite clear signs of their son’s deteriorating mental health.

Judge Cheryl Matthews imposed the extended sentence, stating it was meant to serve as a deterrent and underscored the parents’ negligence in preventing the tragedy.

The Crumbleys will be eligible for parole after serving 10 years but cannot be held for more than 15 years if parole is denied.

The prosecution highlighted that the parents had ignored warning signs and had purchased the gun used in the attack.

On the day of the shooting, they chose to attend work instead of addressing concerns raised about their son’s behavior.

The school district has since pledged to review and enhance its practices and policies in response to the incident.
