AGS NEWS – In Nigeria, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reported a record-breaking monthly data consumption of 721,522 terabytes, marking the highest figure ever recorded.
This surpasses the previous record set in December 2023, which stood at 713,200 terabytes.
The NCC also noted a significant increase in active Internet subscriptions, totaling 161,977,883 compared to 156,244,368 subscriptions in the previous year.

These subscriptions comprise various service providers, including mobile telcos, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and Fixed connections.
While there was a slight decline in Internet users in January 2024 compared to December 2023, dropping from 163.8 million to 161.9 million, Internet penetration remained strong at 42.53%.
Broadband subscriptions totaled 92,195,937 million, indicating a growing preference for high-speed connectivity.
Despite the rise in 4G subscriptions, 2G connections remain predominant, accounting for 57.78% of connections in January 2024.
However, 4G subscriptions increased from 31.33% to 31.75% over the same period, signaling a shift towards faster Internet services.

5G subscriptions also saw a slight increase, reaching 1.11% of all connections in January 2024.
However, Africa still lags behind in 5G coverage, with only 6% coverage as of December 2023, according to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
