Lai Mohammed reveals impact of fake news on his 40 year marriage

AGS NEWS – Former Minister Lai Mohammed revealed at an event commemorating Prof. Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday in Lagos how fake news on social media almost ended his 40-year marriage.

Mohammed, who spoke on “The Media in the Age of Disinformation,” shared his ordeal with fake news during his tenure as minister, emphasizing its damaging effects.

He recounted how his wife woke him up one night in 2018, believing a false story circulating about government officials, including himself, having billions of dollars in overseas accounts.

Mohammed spent hours convincing her of the absurdity of the claim, using budget figures to debunk it.

He highlighted the pervasive nature of fake news, which persisted even during the 2023 elections, targeting President Bola Tinubu.
