In October 2023, Tinubu had approved a provisional N35,000 wage award for all federally employed workers for a six-month period, scheduled to commence in September 2023.

The decision was reached following discussions between representatives of the federal government and organized labor, aiming to avert a nationwide strike planned by labor unions in protest against the removal of petrol subsidies and economic challenges.

Currently, only federal government workers have been receiving the wage award.

Tinubu stressed that extending the wage award to state employees would ease the burden on the public until a new minimum wage is officially announced.
