Kano court sentences two Bureau De Change operators to jail

AGS NEWS – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) revealed through a post on its official handle on Tuesday, February 27, that two individuals were sentenced after pleading guilty to charges related to operating a Bureau De Change without a valid license.

According to the EFCC, Munkaila Sani and Mohammed Sani were convicted upon arraignment at the Kano Zonal Command of the EFCC.

They pleaded guilty to separate one-count charges concerning engaging in financial operations of a bureau de change without the required license.

The charge against Munkaila Sani stated, “That you Munkaila Sani sometime in February 2024 in Kano within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did engage in a financial operation of bureau de change without a valid licence…” The defendants admitted their guilt when the charges were read to them during the arraignment.

Prosecution counsel Aisha Tahar Habib urged the court to convict and sentence them accordingly based on their pleas.

However, counsel to the defendants, Abdulrahman Isah, appealed to the court for leniency, citing the defendants’ remorsefulness and age.

Justice Yunusa sentenced each defendant to one year in prison.

The conviction follows their arrest by EFCC operatives in Kano, based on reliable intelligence about their involvement in an unlicensed bureau de change syndicate operating around the Wapa BDC market and Grand Central Hotel in Kano.
