Customs commence distribution of confiscated food items today

AGS NEWS – Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller General of Customs, has declared that the distribution of confiscated food items will kick off this Friday.

In a briefing with journalists in Lagos on Thursday, Adeniyi cautioned against the resale of the distributed food items.

He emphasized that customs officials are prohibited from participating in the distribution process, noting that rice packages weighing 25kg would be available for sale at N10,000 each.

This development comes after the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) disclosed its plans to directly distribute seized food items to Nigerians, as stated by the National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, earlier this week.

Adeniyi outlined the eligibility criteria, mentioning that individuals must present a Nigerian Identification Number to qualify. He specified target groups such as artisans, teachers, nurses, religious bodies, and others within the NCS operational areas.

The Comptroller General reiterated warnings against profiteering or exploitation of the initiative, stressing that the items are not meant for resale.

Adeniyi also indicated that the distribution exercise is temporary and serves as a means for the NCS to dispose of seized food items.
