South Africa goalkeeper Williams explains why couldn’t save penalties against Nigeria

AGS NEWS – South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has opened up about his inability to save any penalty kicks during his team’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final match against Nigeria’s Super Eagles earlier this month.

Williams, who was hailed as a hero for Bafana Bafana in their shootout victory against Cape Verde in the AFCON quarterfinals, faced disappointment as he failed to stop any of the penalties in the semi-final clash against Nigeria.

The Super Eagles emerged victorious with a 4-2 win in the shootout, advancing to the final where they ultimately lost 2-1 to Ivory Coast.

Reflecting on the match weeks after the conclusion of the AFCON tournament, Williams disclosed that he attempted to psych out some of the Super Eagles’ penalty takers but was unsuccessful.

“Obviously, it is either you are going one of three sides, it’s either down the middle or left or right. Now they don’t want us to talk to the players anymore.

I try to push the limits, so I go up to them and try to tell them where they are going so that at least I have cut out one side,” Williams shared with CBS Sports Golazo.

“They started studying me as well; you know, four out of five penalties went down the middle, so now I need to come up with better ideas,” added the 32-year-old.

Despite the disappointment in the semi-final, Williams was awarded the Golden Glove Award at the AFCON 2023 tournament.
