NLC stands firm on planned protest, criticizes DSS

AGS NEWS – In defiance of warnings issued by the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) remains resolute in its decision to stage nationwide protests aimed at addressing the prevailing economic hardships gripping the nation.

Commencing its mobilization efforts on Monday, the organized labor has steadfastly prepared its members for a two-day protest scheduled for February 27 and 28, citing the escalating cost of living crisis across the country as the impetus for action.

Sources close to the matter reveal that the Federal Government’s failure to honor its commitments following a 14-day ultimatum issued by the Labor Union has spurred the forthcoming demonstrations.

In a statement released on Wednesday, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya urged the union to reconsider its plans, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and public order through dialogue and negotiation rather than resorting to actions that could exacerbate tensions.

Undeterred by the DSS advisory, NLC President Joe Ajaero affirmed the organization’s intention to proceed with the protests.

In a statement personally signed by Ajaero, he questioned the DSS’s failure to apprehend individuals purportedly planning to disrupt the demonstrations.

Expressing concern over the DSS’s characterization of the protests as potentially violent, Ajaero underscored the peaceful nature of their intended action, emphasizing their commitment to upholding the country’s sovereignty and security.

“We cannot fold our hands and pretend all is well. That will be a grievous conspiracy that history will not forgive,” Ajaero remarked, rejecting any insinuation that the protests pose a threat to peace or security.

The NLC reiterated its stance on the necessity of addressing the soaring cost of living, highlighting the plight of both ordinary citizens and DSS personnel affected by the economic hardships.
