Labour party chairman Abure arrested in Edo state

AGS NEWS – The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Julius Abure, was apprehended by security personnel in Edo State on Wednesday, just days before the party’s primary election in the state.

Abure’s arrest took place at the Zone 5 police headquarters in Benin, Edo State, as confirmed by sources. It was reported that the arrest stemmed from a petition forwarded to the Zone from the office of the Inspector General of Police in Abuja.

Videos and images circulated online showed Abure being forcefully restrained by police officers while his supporters from the Labour Party attempted to intervene.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Zone, Tijani Momoh, stated that Abure was being held in response to the petition from the Inspector General’s office.

However, Momoh did not disclose the details of the petition or whether Abure was being detained or questioned.

Abure has been embroiled in internal disputes within the party, including allegations of substituting candidates for the 2023 general election without their consent and mismanagement of party funds.

These issues, along with factional conflicts within the party, are speculated to be linked to his arrest.
