Guinea’s military junta dissolves government, seals borders

AGS NEWS – Guinea’s military junta, which took control in a coup in September 2021, has announced the dissolution of the government.

The decree was delivered via state TV by Brig Gen Amara Camara, the Secretary General of the presidency, on Monday night, February 19.

No reasons were given for the dissolution, nor was a timeline provided for the formation of a new government.

Ministers from the dissolved government have been instructed to surrender their passports and official vehicles, with their bank accounts frozen.

Security agencies have been ordered to seal the country’s borders until full control of government ministries is transferred to the junta.

Lower-level officials will temporarily manage state ministries until a new government is established.

Bernard Goumou led the dissolved government, having been appointed prime minister by coup leader Mamady Doumbouya.

The coup in September 2021 saw Col Doumbouya leading Guinea’s armed forces to overthrow elected President Alpha Condé, following protests over Condé’s controversial bid for a third term.

Guinea is among several countries in West and Central Africa to have experienced coups in recent years, alongside Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Gabon.

These coups have drawn condemnation from regional bodies such as the West African regional bloc Ecowas, as well as the African Union and the UN.
