A former Def Jam video producer has filed a lawsuit against hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, accusing him of rape and sexual assault that allegedly occurred in the 1990s.
The lawsuit, filed in New York Federal Court on Tuesday by a woman identified as Jane Doe, who previously held a senior position at Def Jam Recordings, alleges that her career was severely impacted by the traumatic experiences she endured with Simmons.

Under New York’s Adult Survivors Act and Gender Motivated Violence Act, Doe is suing Simmons for sexual battery/assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and false imprisonment.
According to the complaint, Doe claims that Simmons, initially maintaining a professional relationship, began making unwelcome sexual advances towards her during work interactions.
The assault allegedly occurred when Doe brought a rough cut of a music video to Simmons’ apartment for approval, where he reportedly propositioned her and ultimately raped her.
Following the incident, Doe claims to have struggled professionally and personally, eventually leaving Def Jam in 1997 and relocating from New York to California.

In response to the lawsuit, Doe’s attorney Kenya K. Davis stated that her client’s traumatic experiences echo those of other women who have accused Simmons of similar misconduct over the years.
Simmons has faced previous sexual assault allegations, with multiple women coming forward since 2017. He has denied all allegations and maintains his innocence, citing the passage of nine lie detector tests.
