Ex-CBN governor Emefiele approved $6.2m for election observers – Witness

In the ongoing trial of Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the first prosecution witness, Ogau Onyeka Michael, testified on Monday, February 12, 2024, before Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Maitama, Abuja.

Michael disclosed how the ex-CBN governor sanctioned the disbursement of $6,230,000 in cash for international election observers during the 2023 general election.

Michael, a former branch controller of the CBN, Abuja branch, provided these details while giving his testimony in court.

Emefiele faces a 20-count amended charge, including allegations of corrupt advantages, conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, forgery, and obtaining by false pretenses, all related to the aforementioned sum of $6,230,000.

During Monday’s proceedings, Michael, led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, confirmed the authenticity of documents presented to him by the prosecution and acknowledged his involvement in processing these documents.
